Greg King

Industry Experience:

Having been in the industry for over 12 years since leaving university I have built a strong foundation in lighting for film and TV. My career has been dedicated to the lighting department, where I have developed expertise in designing, rigging, and managing lighting setups to help bring a Director of Photography’s vision to life.

Gaffering Experience:

With 12 years of experience in the film and television industry as a gaffer I have worked extensively across short films, music videos, commercials, feature films, and TV dramas, adapting to the unique demands of each format. My experience spans everything from intimate indie productions with minimal crew to large-scale television series requiring complex lighting setups. Working across these different sectors has given me a broad skill set, strong problem-solving abilities, and the flexibility to adapt to the creative and technical challenges of each project.

I take pride in not only ensuring the technical precision of lighting but also in collaborating closely with the DOP, production team, and other departments to shape the atmosphere and visual language of a production.

Directors of Photography Collaborated With:

I have had the privilege of working with some incredibly talented Directors of Photography, including:

Arthur Mulhern, Adam Scarth, Matt North, Simon Tindall, August Jakobsson and Albert Salas

Each collaboration has strengthened my ability to adapt to different working styles and creative approaches, helping me refine my craft as a gaffer.

Filming Sectors & Notable Work:

TV Drama

Trying (Series 1 & 2) – Apple TV (DOP: Arthur Mulhern)

Truth Seekers – Amazon TV (DOP: Arthur Mulhern)

Feature Films

Obey – Winner of Best Cinematography, TriBeCa Film Festival 2019 (DOP: Albert Salas)

These productions have given me hands-on experience in everything from naturalistic, character-driven storytelling to stylized, highly technical lighting setups, allowing me to adapt to a wide range of visual styles and creative visions.

Commercials & Events

I have worked on campaigns and branded content for major international brands, including:

Max Factor, Rimmel, Lenovo, Pampers, Mulberry, Jaguar, Samsung, Jimmy Choo, Ferrari, Vogue, Adidas, and Palace Skateboards.

Each commercial presents unique challenges, whether it’s fast turnarounds, intricate set builds, or achieving high-end cinematic lighting in a short timeframe. I thrive in these high-pressure environments, ensuring that lighting enhances both the brand’s aesthetic and the director’s creative intent.

Favourite Aspect of the Job:

What I love most about gaffering is the collaborative process—working closely with the DOP to design and execute lighting setups that bring their creative vision to life. From pre-production planning to the final shot, I enjoy the problem-solving and precision that go into achieving the perfect lighting balance.

I also thrive on the energy of a busy film set, where teamwork, adaptability, and quick thinking are essential. Every project brings new challenges and opportunities to push creative and technical boundaries, which keeps the job exciting and rewarding.

Future Aspirations:

Looking ahead, I aim to continue gaffering UK feature films and TV dramas, contributing to visually compelling storytelling. I’m also keen to stay at the forefront of emerging lighting technologies, including wireless DMX, app-based lighting control, and energy-efficient lighting solutions that enhance both creativity and sustainability on set.

My goal is to keep refining my craft, working on innovative projects, and collaborating with talented filmmakers to help bring bold visual ideas to the screen.
